the History Boys

Voted ‘The Nation’s Favourite Play’ in 2013, this new stage production of The History Boys by Alan Bennett, opened at the Theatre Royal Bath in the summer and was then followed by a UK tour.

It has been a pleasure working once again with designer Grace Smart who has designed a wonderful set.

The scenic construction, design and finish on this is very simple and pared back - yet so effective. This stage set has the most compelling show floor replicating an old school gym with an infinity curve and back wall, thick bands of ‘old worn’ gym outlines and hundreds of ‘ floor board’ lines all produced by hand.

The central truck, a hand turning revolve using an air system, is operated by the actors throughout the production with a functional classroom on one side and lacklustre playground exterior on the other.
