BEHIND THE SCENES

  • Carpentry - “The art and skill of cutting, working and joining timber”

Mi has a skilled and professional team of carpenters with extensive experience in stage sets and theatrical projects. With expertise in handling all processes from inception to completion including material choices, techniques, tools and equipment, quality assurance and safety.

Using a combination of new and traditional carpentry techniques Mi are skilled at turning models and designs into reality.

The large CNC machine ensures we can achieve efficient and detailed cuts with exact drawings being replicated on sheet material and reducing as much waste as possible.

  • Scenic artistry - “The expertise and artistry of painting backdrops, murals, props and creating different finishes”

We can take the designs and ideas provided by a production or set designer and create set pieces, which could be anything from city scapes to a period styled brick wall. Working with small detailed models to replicate the finite colours and ideas, transforming the built construction and bringing everything to life. Specialising in all kinds of finishes:

Brick Finish, Concrete, Marbling, Metal Finish, Paint & Plaster, Sculpture & Poly Carving, Stonework, Wallpaper, Wood Finishes, Greenery

There is a real skill in ‘detail’ eg identifying period effects and distressed areas on a set from a small model and replicating them onto a theatrical set, ensuring that practicalities and budgets are considered throughout.

  • Metal fabrication - “The creation of metal structures by cutting, bending and assembling processes

The investment in equipment within the Mi workshop for metal fabrication ensures we can tackle the majority of structural or decorative metal pieces.

From large pieces of frame work on most sets, to support carpentry, or a replica copy of the Eiffel tower through to working on prison beds for a new immersive theatre experience, we can competently undertake metal work.

  • Bespoke - “The process of creating custom-made, one-of-a-kind structures, props or stands to meet the specific needs and requirements of a client”

All in house, we can provide the complete package for you, from design to on site fit-up services. As proud UK manufacturers, we are able to manufacture bespoke display equipment to meet your specific requirements including complex designs or simple cut panels .

Custom built displays are built, all in line with the style and brand of the client and the final venue for fit up. All considerations for public venues (museums, art galleries, shopping centres) ensuring all items are extremely well fitted to guarantee stability whilst not compromising on the visitors experience.

Stands, display cases, plinths, protective covers can all be built and compliment the venues.

  • Prop Build - “The creation of ‘something’ made by handling of different materials to produce a physical outcome”

We use a variety of skills including sculpting, poly carving, fettling, metal working, welding and painting to reproduce props requested by the designers. with the advancement of technology and workshop investments we can utilise the 3D printer for prop creation. Designs and technical drawings can be produced in house for the team to work to, or we can work to designs provided, in addition to sourcing of props to ‘age and distress’.

  • CNC Maching and Cutting Service.33Our CNC machiner works hard for our productions and for client that just need CNC. We can manage both large scale projects whilst being flexible to support smaller bespoke designs. The use of different materials to create forms, both complex in design and simple shapes, all with attention to detail. Send us your files (AutoCad, SolidWorks, Vector Works) and we can CNC these shapes and designs for you.
